Pink Shirt Day 2013

Today we had Pink Shirt day as a way to voice our position that Bullying is not ok and our class and school will stand up to bullies. This little adventure began when I challenged the school that if 350 students wore pink I would color my hair. We had kids submit posters and writing pieces and many other things to help support our cause. In the end it turns out the kids want me in pink and so tomorrow I will be coming in as a new and pink hair Mr.G stay tuned for pictures. One of the students wrote a great little piece about bullying and in the end quoted the Great Sansei Woe from Lego Nijago " The best way to defeat your enemy is to make them your friend" Check out some pictures below.

The day before Valentines

Today we made Valentine collection envelopes and really put heavy emphasis on math. Division was the game of the day and we are showing some great growth. We also tested our multiplication skills and are coming along very well.

The highlight of the day would have to be dodgeball with the almost 60 kids. It was awesome but I feel as though my arm might fall right off. After a few hits to the face I decide it was time to take the kids down. We all had a great time :)

Friendship keepers a daily exercise

I know we have discussed friendship keepers before but today was just a fantastic moment. The kids always ask if we can do friendship keepers and I am always happy to let them share these great moments of kindness directed at their classmates. Today was a great day. Almost everyone contributed and one student received 3 (which was a first for him ). Afterwards kids walked up to congratulate him on his 3 friendship keepers and he was just beaming. Another student dubbed his math partner a mathamagician which of course is already a made up word and his spelling did not even come close but he was so proud to call his partner a mathamagician that the whole class cheered them both on. Teaching is the greatest job.  The adventure continues tomorrow.

When science experiments do not work...

Elementary teachers get to play many roles. Artist, writer, historian, scientist and so many more. It is great fun when they match up with your natural talents. For good old Mr.Gilson that does not always happen in science haha. Today we had a great time discussing acids and their affect on rocks and minerals. We have a sample of mystery rocks that we have spent time trying to identify based off a series of tests. Today we tested the effects of pouring an acid (vinegar) over top of our minerals. We have a key for the chart so I know how the tests were supposed to turn out. This of course did not happen so we did the test then filled out the chart with the correct information. A few samples were supposed to fizz under the influence of the vinegar. After we poured the vinegar over the rocks nothing really happened...Oh well the kids still had fun predicting what was going to happen and tomorrow we will reveal the mystery rocks  :)  Wish us luck.

The power of sours

Good day today working on summaries, division and looking at the regions of Tunisia. What a mix but it was a fun time.

Our division introduction featured the concept of equal sharing. Students were given random amounts of sour candies and sorted them into equal groups. Students were solving to the point that an equal group would not be possible then solving the problem by cutting up the remaining pieces. Others opted out of candies and their group was able to change the equal sharing groups to form an even group. Mathamagicians were appointed and we began working with a variety of different numbers. The multiplication and division seems to be coming along better than addition and subtraction. We will continue to work and build. Have a happy Tuesday.

A Giant adventure in summaries

Great day today. We worked on writing, reading and arithmetic haha. No seriously though we had a very productive day in grade 3. The kids played a new game called PIG in math and it was very fun. I lost but hey we can't win them all. We discussed giant river otters in Peru and played with some cool minerals in science. The Principal came in to watch for a bit while we talked about summaries and eating snails. David's Father was our reading focus of the day and it was an enjoyable read where we practiced many of our skills. Love great Mondays.

Friday

Nothing like a few days without the kids to make you miss them. Back to work we were today and it was a great day. Math and reading comprehension filled the day with a quick game and new seating plan to finish up the day. Going to get back to my TRIBES work with the kids and really focus our energy on team building and cooperation. Have a great weekend.

Cheers,
